More new cars were sold in Ireland yesterday than the first working day of the year, which is normally one of the busiest for sales.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry has also said more new cars were sold yesterday than sold in the whole month of June.

More than 1,900 new motors were registered with the "132" number plate.

That is compared to almost 1,500 on the first working day of January.

The Revenue Commissioners says in total 2,153 vehicles were registered with the new plate on 1 July.
